Happy World Photography Day 2023 from London

I recently purchased a second-hand 40mm pancake lens for under £100.

So an afternoon in London seemed like the perfect opportunity to test it out.

I challenged myself to take photos only with the tiny Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Lens and here are the results:

The tiny 40mm pancake lens

This is the cheapest, smallest and lightest lens in my camera bag, so why this lens?

  • 40mm is pretty close to being exactly what we see with the human eye, photos at these ‘normal’ focal lengths can be powerful as the viewer tends to feel like they are looking at the scene in the photograph almost as if they were there, rather than feeling as if they are looking at a photo.

  • I know 40mm isn’t very wide, but it is still a wider focal length than I am comfortable with using. I think it will stretch me and make me think differently about photography.

  • Plus, It will help me familiarise myself with a focal length that I haven’t used before.

So far I have really enjoyed this lens, for its size, weight and price the results are very sharp and pleasing to my eye at least.

I also found that limiting myself to only using this lens made me try some more creative shots (e.g. the long exposure shot of the taxi) and shoot from different perspectives.

It also happens to be ‘World Photography Day’. So, happy World photography day, happy shooting!
